Musical Groups

Home

  • Birdsongs of the Mesozoic
Experimental, instrumental, challenging (but rewarding...) music. NY Times says it "sounds like a party in a Cubist roadhouse".

  • Revolutionary Snake Ensemble
Improvisational horn and percussion band that likes to dress up and march around in front of people. **Boston Music Award & Phoenix/WFNX Best Music Poll nominees**

  • The Circadian Rhythm Kings
Free improvisational ensemble featuring Todd Brunel, Andrew Hickman, Gary Fieldman, John Funkhouser, with a new self-titled digital release now available from Innova Recordings

  • Musaner
Ara Sarkissian's elegant, creative, and often brilliant arrangements of traditional Armenian and Balkan folk music mixed with Ara's own original compositions and flavored with improvisation.

  • Occasionally the following projects:

    • Chandler Travis Philharmonic
Known for his work with The Incredible Casuals, Chandler is a wonderful songwriter with a unique and humorous perspective on life. That's another way of saying that he's a twisted genius.

    • Willie Alexander's Persistence of Memory Orchestra
Boston rock legend Willie Loco Alexander's experimental beat poetry/jazz/rock & roll project. Willie is brilliant. The two CDs ("Persistence of Memory Orchestra" & "The East Main Street Suite") were on Accurate. Find them. Quite simply, they are masterpieces.

    • The Leda Row Trio
Two saxes and drums playing Andrew Hickman's compositions based on twelve-tone rows, and other guided improvisations.

    • The Ken Field Alto Saxophone Project
Music for alto saxophones with acoustic bass and drums.

  • Past projects:

    • Bad Art Ensemble
Former Wednesday night band at the Plough and Stars, Mass Ave, Cambridge. You had a good time!

    • Crown Electric Company
70's R&B love thang. **1998 Boston Music Award nominees**

    • Alto Reform School
      Nine-piece three-female-vocalist-fronted all-star 70's soul/r&b band

    • The Board of Education
Post-neo-hippy groove/funk/jam band. House band Thursdays at the Middle East Corner/Bakery, Cambridge from 1997-2003.

    • Dig Big
Funky saxophone quartet with Jeff Robinson (Jeff Robinson Trio, x-Shy Five), Henley Douglas (Boston Horns, x-Heavy Metal Horns), Dave Sholl (Four Piece Suit, Barrence Whitfield)

    • Skin
Boston's premiere psychedelic funk band circa 1985-88. Think Prince meets INXS.
